Painting - exterior

Many homeowners don't think about painting their houses until they find evidence of damage to their siding or stucco. While many of us repaint for overall appearance or "curb appeal", we should keep in mind that the primary value of paint is to waterproof, protect and preserve the exterior of our home.

Equally important to consider when re-painting a home is the labor-intensive preparation work. The more damage found on the home, the more time-consuming the preparation and repair will be, before painting. If the paint is peeling, it must be scraped, sanded and then a primer coat must be applied before repainting.

If the paint has worn off siding or trim, that exposed wood may need to be replaced before it is primed and painted. If bare wood has been exposed to water, dry rot may develop -- and can spread to healthy wood. Unfortunately the longer dry rot has gone unchecked, the more wood that will need to be replaced before painting.

Another consideration: since all painters pay about the same for paint, does a lower cost reflect use of thinner or fewer coats or a lower quality or watered-down paint?

Most likely, the difference may reflect labor costs. And if a cheaper job means your painter won't do all necessary prep work, the new paint is only as stable as the deteriorating wood or flaking paint it covers - so it is only a matter of time until the new paint starts flaking and peeling and even looking worse than before you had it repainted. You may have to pay another contractor even more to redo the job next year than you will pay to have it done right the first time.

It is important that you walk your property with each contractor who comes to give you a bid, discuss what needs to be done and why, and include everything, including warranties, in the written contract. If a cheaper price means the painter is skipping things like proper preparation before painting, thorough caulking around all windows, care of your landscaping, etc., you are hardly saving money!

Fix any damage and try to solve any structural problems that lead to water damage or you'll be painting again before you know it.

Keep an eye out for dry rot as it is found on exterior as well as interior wood and can cause serious structural damage to your house. Dry rot is crumbling wood caused by a fungus.

Decks/Patios/Sunrooms

Whether you're replacing an older deck or building a new one, a backyard deck is a great way to add value to your home.

A well-designed deck can transform your backyard from ordinary into an interesting and inviting outdoor living space -- a place to entertain friends, or just relax with the family.

Before building your deck, make sure it's the right design for your needs. All too often homeowners build a deck, only to realize once it's finished that it is lacking some important features.

Patios are growing in popularity thanks to their long-term value and a trend toward outdoor living. A patio can be a simple slab of concrete or slate or an elaborate and beautiful design that starts our with an idea and a plan.

When you are ready to make the most of your outdoor living space, you may also want to add amenities like low-voltage lighting, planters, and fountains.

Let your lifestyle and needs dictate the details you choose to add. One of our experienced designers will personally meet with you to plan and design exactly the patio you want.

Fix Rotten Wood

Homeowners spend billions every year to repair the damage caused by moisture intrusion. Commonly called "dry rot," it occurs in both new and old dwellings that have not been adequately sealed.

If proper weather protection measures are taken during original construction or remodeling, a sealing maintenance program is relatively painless and reasonable in cost. When ignored, omitted or overlooked, dry rot becomes a homeowner's worst nightmare.

What is dry rot? Dry rot is crumbling wood caused by a fungus, where the wood becomes crumbly and powdery, losing all of its structural integrity. Unless the avenue of moisture intrusion is sealed off and the infested wood and water concentration removed, the deterioration continues.

How do I know if my home needs moisture protection? The extent of the damage caused by moisture intrusion cannot be readily assessed without actually opening and thoroughly inspecting the interior structural condition of the concerned walls, decks or roof systems.

Our specialist will thoroughly assess the problem, and provide you with a plan for repair, moisture protection, and maintenance. We have successfully completed hundreds of jobs that required extensive dry rot repair.

Gutter Installation/Cleaning

The main function of gutters is to save your home's siding the stress and damage that would ultimately be caused by water draining off your roof. Without redirection, your house would be saturated by a deluge of water every time it rains, causing wear against outside walls, windows and doors, and compromising the seals that keep your house water-tight.

Gutters take the run-off from your roof and direct it to downspouts, which move the water down and away from your home's foundation, to help prevent flooding. If your gutters become clogged, it puts your entire home at risk of water damage.

To drain effectively, gutters must be positioned to slope at the correct angle, because if your gutters are clean but not draining properly, you'll need to adjust the slope. Gutters should be installed tightly against the eaves, with a sufficient number of brackets or straps to keep them secure.

As with many home maintenance tasks, the best medicine is prevention. You should have your gutters cleaned thoroughly at least once a year, and it never hurts to clean your gutters and downspouts twice a year, in the autumn and the spring, to limit your exposure to rotting leaves and other debris.

If you have trees near your rooftop, you should pay special attention to the gutters near areas where they shed leaves.

We'll gladly send an expert to assess your gutter needs. Please click here to fill out our contact form - someone will get back to you within 48 hours.

Tree Removal and Stump Grinding

In many cases, a city arborist must first be consulted and issue approval before Metro Atlanta residents can remove a tree. But once the tree has been removed, there is another issue to deal with.

A stump of a removed tree can be an eyesore in the yard, and normally takes a long time to rot.

Consider letting our experts remove these stumps by reducing them to soil and wood chips, allowing the planting of grass or a garden.

We'll gladly schedule a visit with our tree removal specialist. Please click here to fill out our contact form - someone will get back to you within 48 hours.
